A thing --a word, a gesture, an object-- is not merely the thing itself, it is also a link to everything it has been. Every thing carries with it the weight of all the emotions it has expressed or been witness to. A photograph is not only paper, not just a picture, it is the moment portrayed on the paper, it is the people in it, it is the feelings they shared.
The absence of a thing is thus not only the fact of a single thing not being there. It is the echo or the portent of the absence of all that thing represents.
No thing, no action, no time is just here and just now, and no more. No thing --no word, no gesture, no object-- holds only what we wish it to hold here and now, and no more.
And what a lonely and fragmented world it would be, were it so.
Thanks Uncledark. Some times it is best to remember this as it is helpful to hold those memories, but some times it hurts too. As I unpack the last(I hope) of my stuff and finally put it away, I find objects and pictutres that can stop me in my tracks. These items and pictures hold such memories, both good and not so good. May be I should get rid of some of it, but then it is nice to remember where I come from.
Some times I really miss my family, chosen and birth.
Well good night Lj.
