I heard her voice floating over the sand dunes beckoning me. I thought I was quiet in my advancing. I was under the spell of her song.
"I'm just a little balck rain cloud, hovering over the honey tree." She sang. Wait, AA Millan? Was I being sceranaded by Winnie the Pooh? I must have heard wrong.
"Nope, it is Pooh you heard. Would you rather have Blossom Dearie?"
What? Who said that? The Mermaid couldn't be talking to me... could she?
"Well if you weren't thinking so loudly and distracting me from my song, then I wouldn't be talking to you! Besides your curls are lovely and distracting. Is it some kind of science experiemnt you are conducting up there?"
Wait. I must be imagining this. I mean Mermaids aren't real, and yet there she was, candy floss tentacles, enchanting voice and fins!
"Would you please stop talking to yourself. I can hear you either way!" she demanded.
"Hello. Sorry about that," I said blushing and smiling at her.
"That's better! Now what's wrong with Pooh songs? I like them myself," she said.
"Oh nothing." I replied sitting down next to her on the sand dune. I found myself falling into her blue eyes that sparkled like the moonlite sea.
She giggled at me and said," You are just right for me. Not to tall, not to short. Pick me up please." She opened her arms for me to embrace her.
Amazed, I stood up and scooped her into my arms. She place her head on my shoulder then said," Thank you for this," then She Bit Me!
I almost droppped her but she just giggled at me and said "You are pretty strong. Want to come away with me?"
"Where would we go?" I was still not really believing I had a mermaid in my arms and was also still in shock from the bite which hurt, but was also comforting. It kept me in check with reality. If I hurt, it must be real.
"Of course I am real. Will you stop thinking to yourself. I can still hear you!"
"Fine. Where to then?" I asked. She smiled and said "Home." "Mine or yours?" I responded. All she said was "Yes."
So I now have a giant swimming pool in the extra bedroom and I get to listen to her singing while she swims and every night she and I go down to the wharf where she swims with the sea lions.
If you ever hear the call of a mermaid, be ready for a bite and a song.
