Fact of the Day: Bellevue
Bellevue Hospital in New York City is the oldest hospital in the United States. Although not yet named at the time, it was born in 1736 on the upper floor of a "Publick Workhouse and House of Correction" that stood at the site of the current City Hall in lower Manhattan. A single room measuring 25 ft by 23 ft was set aside solely for the care of the indigent sick. After the American Revolution, as New York City's population increased, severe epidemics began to ravage the city. The facility was inadequate, so in 1794 the city acquired some farmland on which there was a mansion named "Belle Vue"; it was used as an infirmary and called Belle Vue Hospital. Bellevue is the site of many firsts in medical care in the United States: in 1799 it established the first maternity ward, and in 1869 the first hospital-based ambulance service in the world. In 1873, the first school of nursing was opened. The first children's clinic and the first emergency pavilion were opened in 1874 and 187 6, respectively.
