Presently, Cinderella's Prince, still in pursuit of the giant, bounded into the clearing and strode past his wife, not recognizing her.
"Hello," he said in passing.
"The Giantess went in that direction," said Cinderella, pointing the opposite way. Her voice took him by surprise.
"My darling," he exclaimed, turning to her. "I didn't recognize you. What are you doing in those old clothes? And with a child? You must go back to the palace at once. There's a giant on the loose."
"The Giantess has been to the palace," she noted.
"No! Are you all right?"
She nodded diffidently and turned away from him.
"My love, why are you being so cold?" he asked.
"May be because I'm not your only love. Am I?"
The question caught him off guard. He paused and looked down for a moment. Finally, he stared her straight in the eye and said," I love you. But, yes, it's true."
"Why, if you love me, would you have strayed?"
The Prince cleared his throat and ran his hand nervously through his hair."I thought that if you were mine that I would never wish for more. And part of me is as content and as happy as I've ever been. But there remains a part of me that continually needs more."
"I have, on occasion, wanted more," she responded. "But that doesn't mean I went in search of it. If this is how you behave as a prince, what kind of king will you be?"
"I was raised to be charming, not sincere," stated the Prince. "I didn't ask to be born a king, and I am not perfect. I am only human."
"I think you should go," she said, after a pause.
"Leave? But I DO love you," he protested.
"Consider that I've been lost. A victim of the giant."
"Is that what you really wish?" the Prince asked sadly.
"My Father's house was a nightmare. Your house was a dream. Now I want something in between. Please go."
He began to walk away, then stopped."I shall always love the maiden who ran away."
"And I the faraway prince," she reflected.
