1854 - Henry David Thoreau published "Walden." One of my least favorites in high school but in college became a blessing.

1936 - African-American track star Jesse Owens won his fourth gold medal of the Olympic Games in Berlin. In 1987, I was here and saw the stadium! That same summer, Regan also said "Tear this Wall Down Mr. Gorbichov" and toured the stadium

1969 - Actress Sharon Tate and four other people were found brutally murdered in Tate's Los Angeles home; cult leader Charles Manson and several of his disciples were later convicted of the crime. I was in my mommy's tummy so I missed all this mess!

1974 - Succeeding Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford was sworn in as the 38th president of the United States of America. Wow! The Man was not quite two months old! Cradle Robber!

You've got to love Walden: a book extolling the "state of nature" written by a guy who has his mother do his laundry every Sunday-- and parties with his friends every Saturday...
