First SouthWestern Bell Telephone bought Southern New England Telephone and shortly thereafter Pacific Telephone and renamed themselves as SBC Communications. The company later bought Ameritech, and retained the name SBC but altered thier logo. Last year they bought AT&T and renamed themselves at&t. After the first of the year, at&t bought Bell South, which also gave it total ownership of Cingular Wireless (which will be renamed at&t wireless).
Believe it or not, despite the monolith that at&t has become, there IS still choice in the telephone market in most parts of the U.S. Heck, open up to the front of the Yellow Pages and you will find several PAGES of local telephone service providers.
In fact, the only places where you DONT have a choice of telephone provider are small rural areas where smaller telephone companies arent required to allow competition.
We should be careful. We should always be careful. But as the previous commentors have noted, we still have a lot of choice in telephone service. Heck! I don't even have a land line. If I wanted one, comcast would be happy to get one for me...
All I wonder about is if it will effect the Pension I have with Pacific Bell... I doubt it. And as long as they don't ever clue in that I still get my employee package rate on my phone (a whopping $5 per month regardless of calls) I'm good with it.
